The newest revamping of the WWE Womens Tag Team Division started off with a really cool pop and action. Lots of up front spotlight for this new version of the old day coming through to the new generation of fans out there. A lot of the newer fans of WWE were looking forward to a new change in the Women's Division from Rhonda Rousey debuting to winning the Raw Womens Title. There's a bit a of a problem here though.
The WWE Womens Tag Team Championships isn't a new concept in the WWE.
Velvet McIntyre and Princess Victoria were recognized as the inaugural champions when they came to the promotion in 1983 as the NWA World Womens Tag Team Champions. The final champions were The Glamour Girls (Lelani Kia and Judy Martin) when the titles were abandoned in 1989.
However, the WWF had since withdrawn from the NWA and the rights to the championship were owned by The Fabulous Moolah. The WWF in turn bought the rights to the championship from Moolah, and recognized McIntyre and Victoria as the first WWF Women's Tag Team Champions. This ended the lineage of the NWA Women's World Tag Team Championship, though the WWF continued to use the championship belts of the former title to represent their new title.
After six years, the championship was abandoned in 1989, with The Glamour Girls as the final champions. This happened largely due to the lack of tag teams in the women's division, and a lack of female performers in general. This would definitely be an issue for sometime to come. Over the course of the championship's six-year history, there were 5 reigns between 4 championship teams, and 7 individual champions. The inaugural championship team was Velvet McIntyre and Princess Victoria. The Glamour Girls (Leilani Kai and Judy Martin) had the most reigns as a team at two, while individually, Kai, Martin, and McIntyre had the most reigns, also at two.
The Glamour Girls' first reign was the longest reign at 909 days, and they had the longest combined reign at 1,157 days. The Jumping Bomb Angels (Noriyo and Itzuki Yamazaki) had the shortest reign at 136 days. McIntyre was the youngest champion when she was awarded the inaugural championship at 20 years old, while the oldest was Martin when she won the championship at 32 for her second reign. Out of the 5 reigns 4 of them changed in 4 different countries. ( Princess Victoria suffered a career ending neck injury and was replaced with Desiree Petersen.
The WWF World Womens Tag Team Championships would run from May 1983 to Feb 1989.
Now moving on to the newer age of WWE they decided to make some HUGE changes in the women's division so During the December 24, 2018, episode of Monday Night RAW , WWE Chairman/CEO Vince McMahon announced that a new Womens Tag Team Championship would be introduced in 2019, however, it does not carry the lineage of the original and it has been a HUGE let down right from the start.
February 17, 2019, in a tag team Elimination Chamber Match was announced to hold 3 Women Teams from RAW and 3 Women Teams from Smackdown to crown the NEW Womens Tag Team Champions which would make them non exclusive to any brand. ( for you idiots out there that means RAW SMACKDOWN NXT ETC.... ) At this time WWE has many of great talents in the women's division and put some great qualifing matches on tv for us to enjoy.
The teams that participated were ( Nia Jax/Tamina, Liv Morgan/Sarah Logan, Alexia Bliss/Mickie James, Nattie/Dana Brooke, Bailey/Sasha, Alicia Fox/Nikki Cross. Smackdown was only 3 teams The IIconics, Sonya/Mandy Rose and Carmella/Naomi. The Boss and Hug Connection would win the Chamber Match and make history again. Thus the NEW WWE Women's Tag Team Champions were crowned.
As of July 24th 2019 there has only been 2 reigns and that's Boss and Hug Connection and the Current Champions IIconics. At WM 35 in a fatal 4 way match ( Nia Jax/Tamina vs Bailey/Sasha vs Nattie/Beth Phoneix vs IIconics. After WM 35 that following week a lot of controversial things had happened. The Boss and Hug Connection reportedly split up due to the way they were forced to drop the titles so quickly. Sasha Banks asked for a release and left WWE and hasn't been seen since. A lot of reports have surfacing about Banks and WWE agreeing on deals for her come back and its even been leaked that she has been advertised for Summer Slam I guess we will see if it's true.
Now with this being said back to the title of this blog.
This was to be the newest shot of adrenaline into the veins that we call women's division and it has been the shot of death to this concept, to the linage, to the name of the titles, and to the past champions that have had the pleasure of being called a Women's Tag Team Champion. WWE should of been forcing the IIconics to be defending the titles on a regular basis either on TV or at house shows. I really hope that with the NEW Bischoff/Heyman era we get some good shit when it comes to the Women's Tag Team Titles.
I for one would love to see The WWE Women's Tag Team Championships defended in ( Ladder Match, Yet another Elimination Chamber, Survivor Series Match, Falls Count Anywhere Match, Cage Match, Hell in a Cell, War Games ) SORRY I GOT CARRIED AWAY THERE.
If WWE doesn't do something with this concept SOOOOOOOOON then Whats the point anymore.
