From beginnings being used on european tours from The Kliq, (Triple H, HBK and the crew Kevin Nash, Scott and Sean Waltman aka XPac/Syxx soon to be known as The Wolfpac) to the invasion of WCW by The Outsiders leading to the most shocking Heel Turn in history by Hollywood Hulk Hogan, The Too Sweet or Turkish Wolfkiss has been long synonymous with just as much as their slogan New World Order...For Life
I remember, being a teenager with my NWO shirt walking down the street in Auckland NZ and having a random dude approach and be like dude, sick NWO shirt, move into my personal space with his fist raised like he was prepping to throw a punch, then dropping in to the Too Sweet, at that moment, any kind of spidey-sense tingling disappeared, and not wanting to leave my new brother hanging met his too sweet with my too sweet.
This was to become an all too familiar situation. Brotherhood. Respect.
After the demise of WCW and the absorption of WCW wrestlers into the monopoly that was/is the WWE any incantations of the NWO with their watered down 'Too Sweet' didn't really bring new fans to the gesture... sure people knew about it... but the magic of the thing, the thing that made brotherhood of the NWOWolfpac was long gone
That is until the emergence of the Bullet Club, A gaijin heel stable from New Japan Pro Wrestling made up of Prince Devitt aka Finn Balor in the WWE, Karl Anderson, Tama Tonga, Bad Luck Fale, The Young Bucks and Doc Gallows aka Luke Gallows/Festus, who started to use the Too Sweet hand gesture as their 'thing' especially after winning a match... It brought back memories of Hall and Nash standing over downed opponents performing the Too Sweet with Sting, Savage, Konnan, and Lex Luger among others.
It was AWESOME.
The Young Bucks then released Too Sweet Me tshirts, and that ensured the gesture became synonymous with the Bullet Club. Watching NJPW and Ring Of Honor crowds all decked out in Bullet Club gear performing the Too Sweet like some kind of secret handshake, it was strange to see and to say the least, that these wrestling fans are once again, repeating history, a connection to the past.
Hearing from people that wear BC apparel is that those that understand and recognise the brand respond in a cultish fashion like..... 'Hey Bro, Too Sweet Me!' and then the gesture instantly being reciprocated and almost like the scene from Stepbrothers, where Nighthawk and Dragon exclaim.. 'did we just become best friends?' instantly becoming best friends, and offering the other person a beer.
Once again. Brotherhood. Respect
It's an almost unspoken rule that if you see someone walking down the street wearing a Bullet Club (or nWo shirt) don't be shy, walk up to them, give them the Too Sweet and offer them a beer.
If they refuse, hit them with a chair, give them a kicking and paint them with a spraycan.. because hey, it's what Hollywood Hulk Hogan would do... brother.....
